A rock fortress, a jeep at dawn, a clay pot and a morning in the hills.
The four bookings a first Sri Lankan fortnight gets built around. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.
01The long day northSigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temple AdventureSigiriya climbed early, then the five painted caves at Dambulla on the way back. One driver, both sites, no gaps.
02The dawn jeepYala National Park: Half, 7-Hour, or Full-Day Safari & MealsYala on the first gate slot, back before the heat. Meals thrown in on the longer runs, which you will want.
03The kitchen hourTraditional Sri Lankan Cooking ClassTen curries from scratch in a house in Ella, eaten on the veranda. The cheapest thing you will remember longest.
04The hill morningKandy to Ambuluwawa & Kandy City Guided Tuk Tuk Day TourUp Ambuluwawa by tuk-tuk for the spiral tower, then Kandy in the same run. Go at sunrise, before the cloud.
Yala for leopards, Udawalawe for elephants, Minneriya when the herds come down.
Safari is what most people fly in for, and the three parks are not interchangeable. What each one actually delivers, and what a seat in the jeep costs.
Six towns, and the reason each one earns a night.
A capital that runs on three wheels, a lake town with the Tooth Relic on its shore, Dutch ramparts over a surf coast, a hill village under a railway bridge, tea country at nineteen hundred metres, and a river mouth full of monitor lizards.
The days out more travellers take than anything else in Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa: one hot, long, worthwhile day.
Three sites inside an hour of each other. A king’s palace on top of a rock, five caves painted from floor to ceiling, and a ruined capital you see best from a bicycle. Climb first, caves second, ruins when the light drops.
Above twelve hundred metres Sri Lanka turns cold, green and slow.
The tea belt is another country. Cloud comes over the ridge by two, the plains drop away at World’s End, and the Knuckles trails end at a pool you can stand under. Bring a jumper, which nobody ever does.
Every hill-country day out →What a day out in Sri Lanka actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by what it costs. A good share of the island’s best days come in under twenty-five dollars, jeep and driver included.
Tuk-tuk city runs, temple entries, cooking classes and the reserved seat on the hill train.
The standards: a Yala or Udawalawe jeep, Sigiriya and Dambulla in one run, whales off Mirissa.
Three things that only happen in Sri Lanka.
Beaches and temples exist all over south Asia. A leopard on a park track at six in the morning, a fifth-century palace on top of a rock, and a hillside that has been picked by hand for a hundred and fifty years do not.

Leopards at Yala
Yala’s first block holds one of the densest leopard populations measured anywhere, which is why the jeeps queue at the gate before it is properly light. The cats use the sand tracks as roads in the cool hour and are gone into the scrub once the sun is up. Block One shuts for several weeks around September when the water goes, and the drivers move to Block Five.

Sigiriya
A king moved his court to the top of a two-hundred-metre granite plug in the fifth century, built water gardens at the foot of it and had the western face plastered and painted. What is left is the lion’s paws at the halfway terrace, a stretch of mirror wall people were scratching verses onto a thousand years ago, and roughly twelve hundred steps. The metal staircases are in full sun by nine.

The tea country
The British cleared the central highlands for tea after the coffee blight and the estates have been picked by hand ever since, mostly by women carrying the day’s leaf on their backs. A factory visit walks you through withering lofts, rolling and the sorting room, and ends with a tasting where the differences between a high-grown and a low-grown finally make sense.

Four Sri Lankan bookings that will not wait.
Most of this island can be sorted over breakfast. These four run on gate slots, reserved carriages and a calendar that takes no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Kandy to Ella Train Tickets – Reserved SeatsReserved seats on the hill line are a fixed number per carriage and they go days ahead. Unreserved means four hours in the corridor.
- 02Yala National Park Safari Tours: Morning/Evening/Full DayJeeps are counted through the gate and the first slot opens before dawn. That run is the one that finds cats, and it fills first.
- 03Sigiriya and Dambulla Day Trip with SafariThe rock opens at seven and the staircases are metal. By nine you are climbing in full sun with everyone who had a lie-in.
- 04Minneriya National Park Private Jeep SafariThe Gathering runs roughly July to October and shifts between Minneriya and Kaudulla with the water. Out of season the herds are elsewhere.
There is no wrong month for Sri Lanka, only a wrong coast.
May to September the southwest monsoon sits on Galle, Mirissa and the hill country while the east stays dry. November to February the two swap over. Whichever half is wet, the other half is having its season, and the dry-zone parks and the ancient cities run straight through both.
Turtles off Hikkaduwa, blue whales out of Mirissa, a fort you can walk round in an hour.
The south is one long string of small towns, each with a different reason to stop. Snorkel with turtles before the wind gets up, take the whale boat out of Mirissa between November and April, then sit on the Galle ramparts and watch the light go.
